Love Them Both: A Valentine’s Day Reflection on True Love

Writer: Audra GuenatAudra Guenat

On Valentine’s Day, the world celebrates love—romantic love, friendship, and the love shared among family. But at its core, true love is selfless, sacrificial, and life-giving.

It is the love we know in Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us so that we might have life. And it is this kind of love that we are called to reflect in how we care for both mothers and their unborn children.

In a culture that often pits a mother against her child, as if one must be sacrificed for the other’s well-being, we must boldly proclaim a different message: Love them both.

A mother facing an unplanned pregnancy needs to know she is not alone. She needs to know that she is valued, supported, and capable. And just as she deserves love and care, so does the child growing within her. Love does not ask us to choose between them; it compels us to embrace them both.

Love Sees the Value in Both Lives

Every human being is made in the image of God—both the mother and the baby. The love of Jesus reaches out to the one who feels abandoned, scared, or overwhelmed. He never turns away from the vulnerable. Instead, He moves toward them with compassion, offering hope and redemption. As followers of Christ, we are called to do the same.

Loving both means recognizing the worth of every mother, no matter her circumstances. It means offering her not just words of encouragement but tangible help—resources, community, and unwavering support. It also means defending the smallest and most vulnerable among us, the unborn, whose lives are precious in the eyes of their Creator.

Love in Action

Love is not just a feeling—it is action. It is showing up for a mother in crisis, walking alongside her, and being the hands and feet of Jesus. It is providing for her needs, listening to her fears, and reminding her that she is not alone. It is celebrating life, both hers and her baby’s, and affirming that both lives have a purpose.

On this Valentine’s Day, let us remember the love of Christ, which is limitless and sacrificial. Let us extend that love to every mother and child, showing them that they are seen, valued, and deeply loved. Because love—true, Christ-like love—always makes room for both.
