Sometimes, all it takes is a single conversation to turn fear into hope and uncertainty into a choice for life.
The Struggles She Faced
It started with a young woman who approached the clinic, referred by sidewalk advocates. She came with one thing on her mind:
“I just want to know how many weeks.”
As soon as she learned the clinic offered this service, she didn’t hesitate to come in.
She arrived with her partner of 11 months. He had a daughter from a previous relationship and was already paying significant child support. “That’s one of the reasons we’re even considering abortion,” the woman confided. Her partner, though hesitant, assured her he would stand by her no matter what she decided.
A Life-Changing Conversation
Waleska, the manager at HOPE in Bayamón, took her aside to talk one-on-one, and what unfolded was an unforgettable conversation. This young woman was intelligent, professional, and driven. She worked in a chemical lab and had recently been involved in an accident with a powerful chemical. As part of her follow-up care, a routine test revealed something that changed everything:
She was pregnant.
This revelation overwhelmed her. “What if the accident harmed the baby?” she asked, her voice filled with worry. “I had X-rays, medications—what if I’ve already done damage?”
Waleska listened intently, offering comfort and reassurance. As they talked, the young woman leaned in, nodding her head, finishing sentences, and hanging on to every word. The woman also shared a deeply personal story:
Her sister had recently given birth but nearly died during labor due to respiratory arrest. Her sister was healthy, yet the experience had been terrifying.
Seeing an opportunity to bring hope, Waleska spoke:
“Life is powerful. It has a way of making us fight harder, grow stronger, and rise above our fears. And now, you have the chance to fight for your child’s life.”
Choosing Hope Over Fear
Tears filled the young woman’s eyes. She whispered, “You’re right.” Then, almost as if confessing a secret, she added, “I already know it’s a girl. I took a blood test. I told myself, ‘If I’m going to abort, I need to know what I was going to have.’ ”
Waleska leaned forward, her voice full of warmth and conviction:
“Not what you were going to have, but what you are going to have. This baby—your little girl—will be your lifelong friend.”
The young woman broke down, sobbing. In that moment, the truth began to take root in her heart.
Hope in Action
Waleska shared details about the clinic’s programs, explaining all the resources and support available. The woman was astonished. “I had no idea this kind of help even existed!” she exclaimed. Waleska scheduled her for a sonogram and walked her through the next steps.
A few days later, the young woman didn’t show up for her appointment. But then came the call:
She reached out to HOPE in San Juan, explaining that work had prevented her from attending. She wasn’t giving up. She wanted to join the program and stay connected, even if it meant participating online.
Celebrating Life
Another baby’s life was saved. Another mother chose hope over fear. Waleska couldn’t stop praising God for His faithfulness.
“To Him be all the glory!” she said, her heart full. 🙌🏻
